In life, power seems to run everything, on the island it is no different. However, which character really holds the most power? What symbol holds the most power and how does the power change as the novel progresses? On the island, everyone seems to listen to the characters who hold power, whether by choice, or by peer pressure. Throughout the story, one character by the name of Jack Merridew seems to be the most power hungry, and at one point even makes his own tribe near the end of the novel. He scares all of the other kids that don’t follow or don’t want to follow him, and by the end has the original chief of the island running for his life. This must mean he has the most power, right? I actually believe that he does not hold the most power on the island as far as characters go, and as far as symbols go. Ralph had the most power as a character, but as a whole, the beast or “Lord of the Flies” had the most power of all, even if it was just a symbol rather than a living thing.
