# The Bookmark manager you didn't know you needed! Karakeep is the best way to hoard your digital life

## Summary

### **Summary of the Video Transcript**

The video discusses **KaraKeep**, a self-hosted bookmarking tool designed to help users organize and preserve web content efficiently. The presenter highlights the challenges of digital memory decay—dead links, lost resources—and introduces KaraKeep as a solution.

#### **Key Features of KaraKeep:**
1. **Bookmark & Organize:** Save links, notes, and categorize them into lists (e.g., "Networking Education").
2. **AI-Powered Features:**
   - **Auto-Tagging:** AI (OpenAI API) generates relevant tags for saved content.
   - **Summarization:** Condenses long articles into digestible summaries.
3. **Content Preservation:**
   - Takes **snapshots** (screenshots + text transcripts) of web pages to prevent link rot.
   - Allows **full-page archiving** (downloads all assets).
4. **Browser Extension:** Quickly save pages from Chrome/Firefox with AI tagging.

#### **Self-Hosting Setup (Docker & Tailscale):**
- The presenter deploys KaraKeep using **Docker Compose**, with containers for:
  - The main app.
  - A headless Chrome instance (for scraping).
  - Meilisearch (lightweight search engine for bookmarks).
- **Tailscale Integration:**
  - Simplifies remote access via MagicDNS/HTTPS.
  - Uses `tailscale serve` to expose the app securely.

#### **Optional OpenAI Integration:**
- Users can add an API key for AI features (minimal cost: ~$0.50 over 3 months in testing).

#### **Final Thoughts:**
KaraKeep is pitched as a **privacy-focused, self-hosted alternative** to services like Pocket, ideal for researchers and hobbyists who want to "hoard" knowledge without relying on third-party platforms.

**Note:** The app was originally named "Hoarder" but rebranded due to trademark issues.
