Sedia [Attention]#Keeping the right foot still and knee braced back, bend the left knee 90° with toes naturally pointing downwards and simultaneously lock the arms by the sides in the quickest way, with the fists clenched and thumbs by the seamlines of the pants. The thigh is parallel to the ground and the calf parallel to the upper body. Trail Stick (from the Carry)#The drill movements are done as the left heel strikes the ground successively. When the left heel first strikes the ground, the pace stick is pulled forward with the left hand and the right hand is cut across the front of the body to grasp the stick at the point of balance, with the wrist up against the left shoulder and the knuckles uppermost.|When the left heel next strikes the ground, the right hand is returned, with the stick, to the right side of the body while the left hand is removed from the stick and cut to the left side of the body.|As the left heel next strikes the ground, resume the swinging of the arms, such that the pace stick is held at the point of balance in the right hand, thumb down on the left of the stick with fingers slightly curled together on the right. The stick is lightly cradled in the hand allowing it to swing with the movement of the arm. The stick is manipulated between the fingers and thumb so that it remains parallel to the ground at all times.
Carry Stick (from the Trail)#The drill movements are done as the left heel strikes the ground successively. When the left heel first strikes the ground, cut both arms to the sides of the body sharply.|When the left heel next strikes the ground, the stick is forced up beneath the left armpit and the right wrist up against the left shoulder. At the same time the head of the stick is seized with the left hand.|When the left heel next strikes the ground, the stick is forced rearward to the "CARRY" (stick closed) position. At the same time, the right arm is cut to the side.|As the left heel next strikes the ground, resume the swinging of the right arm.
Negotiating steps (at the Trail)#When moving up or down stairs, with the pace stick at the TRAIL, the left arm is cut to the side of the body immediately prior to negotiating the stairs. At the same time, the right forearm is forced up, parallel to the ground with the stick in a vertical position, the shoes of the stick pointing up, and the thumb and fingers wrapped around the stick. At the completion of the stairs, the right hand is forced down to the side of the body. Both arms commence swinging as the left foot first strikes the ground.|Note: If the pace stick is held at the CARRY, i.e. "under the armpit", it can remain in that position when negotiating stairs. This drill applies only when the pace stick is held at the TRAIL.
Measuring with the pace stick#The pace stick is used an aid to drill as it is used to measure the pace (distance taken in a marching step). It is also used by the Sergeant Major when marking the parade ground so that the contingents can take their dressing properly and turn and finish up at the correct points on ceremonial parades. After opening the pace stick, pull out the measuring bar, hold down the spring catch and insert the measuring bar into the slot on the opposite leg and release it once it has clicked in place for one of the measurements. Except for the rightmost man of the leading file (pivot man), the rest of the squad will incline to the right.|Upon the command "Cepat jalan", the entire squad starts to march as follows:linebreaka) The pivot man marches forward 5 paces and halts.linebreakb) The other 2 men will also simultaneously march and wheel to follow him for 5 paces and halt behind him.linebreakc) At the same time, the remaining files will march forward from where they are, with the man at the rightmost of each file leading their respective files. Each file will begin marching and wheeling, independently, to aim for a position to the right of the leading file and will march for an additional 2 paces before halting.
