*Formation & Safety*#Ensure that all cadets are feeling well and are sufficiently hydrated before proceeding. Deploy the cadets in the formation suitable to teach the drill, considering comfort (away from the glare of the sun) and whether the cadets are able to watch the demonstration and listen to the explanations given. Some of the common formations include Open Order, U-shape, "A,B,C", straight line, semi-circle and full circle.
*Introduction*#Introduce the drill by explaining the following:linebreak- Command in Malaylinebreak- Name of drill in Englishlinebreak- Timing of drilllinebreak- When, why or how the drill is used, especially in parades
*Demonstration in full*#Demonstrate the full sequence of the drill with the command and timing for a few times, varying the direction faced by the demonstrator for each demo. Ensure that the demonstration is "perfect", i.e. always bend the knee 90Β°, toes must point down, lock standing knee and elbows, etc.
*Demonstration in steps*#Break down the drill into steps or basic drills. Demonstrate the individual steps clearly (if needed, slowly) without explanation. Next, demonstrate each step while explaining the movement, emphasising the actions for 3 main body parts, i.e. head, arms and legs and the timings associated with the actions. Where necessary, do some demonstrations of common faults made by other cadets. When teaching, always remember to potray the image of a strict and confident Instructor, paying close attention to voice projection (during commanding and explanation), tone and body language; stand and walk with proper posture and avoid standing on one leg, putting hands inside pockets, etc. If a pace stick is held, ensure that it is held with dignity and proper position: at the Carry, at the Trail or Stand Easy. Once done, ask if the cadets have any questions and answer them.
*Practice in steps*#Command the cadets to execute the drill step by step, while actively pointing out and correcting their mistakes without scolding unnecessarily. After executing every step, remind them on the movements for the next step. Do not rush; aim for standards instead of speed. When the cadets have managed to execute the drill a few times in stages and seem to be more confident, make them do the individual steps slightly faster, with lesser interval in between and with no more reminders on the subsequent steps.
*Practice in full*#Once most of the cadets seem to understand the movements and are able to carry out the individual steps properly, command them to execute the drill in full. When they are executing the drill in full for the first few times, it is advisable to give them the timing as well, instead of asking them to give their own timing, so that they have the feel of the actual speed and sharpness of the drill. Continue to point out and correct mistakes as much as possible, regardless of how "minor" the mistake is. Once the cadets are able to execute the drill with a decent standard, ask them to start timing for themselves. When cadets falter due to the losing of step on the march or failure to carry out an action properly, encourage them to recover quickly and carry on with the next movement. Make the cadets practise the drill over and over again, until they are able to execute it sharply in unison and with the correct timing. However, always look out for the health and safety of the cadets; if necessary, introduce a break to allow the cadets to hydrate themselves and rest for a while before continuing.
*Review and Conclusion*#Praise the squad for being able to learn and execute the drill. Summarise the common mistakes that were observed in all the rounds of practise. Test the cadets' understanding by questioning them on the command, timing, execution and purpose. Ask them if they have any final questions and check their safety and welfare.
