[11:18 PM] Kachin: <.=.< Have you been keeping up with my dialup thing?
[11:18 PM] Draekon Sylviar: This probably answers it, but what do you mean?
[11:18 PM] Kachin: Okay! O.=.O!
[11:18 PM] Kachin: So, none of this is a joke.
[11:19 PM] Kachin: About a week ago I satrted looking in to how dialup works, again, which I just kinda do every now and then.
[11:19 PM] Kachin: Found a video of a guy using one computer to send text to another computer using just their mics and speakers, and I was like "That's cool, I bet I can do that!".
[11:19 PM] Kachin: So I did. It was indeed WICKED AWESOME.
[11:19 PM] Kachin: Then I got thinking.
[11:19 PM] Kachin: Can I do this over Skype?
[11:20 PM] Kachin: So it took a while, but I got a toolchain set up on my side that lets me use Skype as a dial-up modem.
[11:20 PM] Kachin: Earlier I actually called someone with it after I helped them set up a similar chain, and it totally works. o______o
[11:20 PM] Kachin: During all this time, I found out that BBSes are still a thing.
[11:20 PM] Kachin: I actually found the phone number of a real BBS, tha accepts connections over a modem, and allows open regristration.
[11:21 PM] Kachin: It's at this point that people've started taking more interest in this than I ever thought they would. I've got like 10-12 people who are morevested in this than I ever imagined.
[11:21 PM] Kachin: *more vested
[11:22 PM] Kachin: So, little bit ago, finally came time to try to dial the BBS, but no dice. Other modem refuses to cooperate. Due to the stuff working over Skype with someone else, I know it's not an issue on my end, and I know it's not an issue with Skype's compression. It should absoutely work.
[11:23 PM] Kachin: I've been operating under the assumption, and a hope and a prayer, that if I play a 1,270 hz tone really loud as the other modem picks up, it'll automatically drop to 300 baud, skip the entre handshake, and just start spitting data at me. This absoutely is not the case, at least with this BBS' particular modem.
[11:24 PM] Kachin: The weird thing is that it goes up by 1,000 hz like it's supposed to, so maybe it's waiting for me to say stuff, but it doesn't seem to care.
[11:24 PM] Kachin: Anyway, I know some newer modems don't accept 300 baud and immediately hang up upon hearing 1,270. This doesn't seem to be the case with this one, which leads me to suspect that I have to do (at least part of) the actual handshake.
[11:25 PM] Kachin: Problem: There is literally no software on the face of the earth that will let me do this without an actual modem.
[11:25 PM] Kachin: So, now there's a guy going to thrist stores to try and find me an actual modem, so I can try to figure out how the handshake procedure works and let me try to imitate it.
[11:25 PM] Kachin: I didn't ask this. They just started doing it.
[11:26 PM] Kachin: Still waiting on results from that, but this might actually happen. The handshake happens in three phases. I *know* I can do the first phase with what I have now because it runs at 300 baud and just sends text back and forth to list what faster baud rates are available.
[11:27 PM] Kachin: Second phase is a bit trickier and I'm going to need an actual modem to play around with, or someone else with a good mic is gunna need one.
[11:27 PM] Kachin: I might have to cheese some of it and use recordings from an actual modem during some parts, but it should work if I have to go to phase 2.
[11:28 PM] Kachin: Phase 3 I definitely cannot do without getting in touch with someone who's actually designed modems before because there's some really weird math involved that I can't replicate with a recording.
[11:28 PM] Kachin: But, if I only list baud rates at 1,200 BPS and under during phase 1, I should be able to convince the answering modem that I don't support echo cancelation or line training, and thus entirely skip stage 3.
[11:29 PM] Kachin: By virtue of simply listing baud rates at all, it's probably going to try and make me do phase 2, but we'll see.
[11:30 PM] Kachin: So, today, I'm going to look up a bunch of recordings of modems connecting and try to see if I can demodulate what they're sending to see if I can reconstruct at least the bare minimum of the beginning of the handshake, and hopefully figure out how to say "I'm really slow please don't yell at me".
[11:31 PM] Draekon Sylviar: xD
[11:31 PM] Draekon Sylviar: Are you trying to replicate dialup?
[11:31 PM] Kachin: Yes, and do it over Skype without an actual modem.
[11:31 PM] Ricardo_Chimaera has disconnected.
[11:31 PM] Draekon Sylviar: Ya dork :p
[11:31 PM] Kachin: This is building off of this one time that I connected to an IRC server with Telnet, and another time I connected to a MUCK with Telnet.
[11:31 PM] Kachin: Though the MUCK with Telnet wasn't even remotely difficult.
[11:32 PM] Kachin: I could connect to this BBS with Telnet too, but comeon, that's too easy.
